Domestic Things

An exhibition created by Hans Stofer

18 January - 17 March 2007

DOMESTIC THINGS is about the adventure of the unknown and confidence of cultivating and giving form to the unexpected. It is important to us to present solutions and possibilities that will stimulate our senses and highlight the importance of 'design' not just as a commodity but as something that is meaningful and inclusive. Domestic Things' is about products, real and virtual, with a twist presented in a purpose designed display context within an existing gallery space at flow. Existing gallery artists' work will form as part of the exhibition. This will give 'Domestic Things' a dynamic that is 'unexpected'.

Hans Stofer

The curator, Hans Stofer has known and worked with most participants, for a number of years. It was important to select designer makers together that have approached design with a critical eye and that have used interdisciplinary , critical thinking to communicate their ideas. The majority of artists are ' creative nomads' born in one place and working in another.

Hans Stofer says that " As the 'curator' I understand my role as an instigator, or an enabler and as someone who creates bridges between the makers and the audience. I believe it is important to talk about what we do and to give the audience the opportunity to understand why we still make things and we all use things to define ourselves. It is also important to highlight the shift from the mass produced to the more personal and intellectually stimulating and meaningful".
