Llif

An exhibition of contemporary craft by makers associated with Wales. A collaboration between flow gallery and Oriel Myrddin Gallery, Carmarthen

22 March - 12 May 2007

Ann Cartin Evans

Wales inspires passion and longing - there is a Welsh word, hiraeth, for the sense of homesickness its countrymen feel when parted from its culture and landscape. This exhibition is of fourteen women makers associated with Wales, all of them receptive to the emotional and aesthetic forces of this small principality. Not all are Welsh by birth - some, such as Irishwomen Ingrid Murphy and Anne Harrington Rees, have chosen to spend time in Wales for the opportunities and lifestyle it can offer; some, like Elspeth Owen, are culturally Welsh and have established their practice elsewhere; some have elected to return, such as Caitlin Jenkins, Laura Thomas and Catrin Howell, following their studies at the Royal College of Art in London. As such they are part of the flow or llif of the creative life of Wales.

The varied and dramatic landscape of Wales has attracted and inspired artists throughout history. Its contemporary makers use the landscape and its forces as both material and motif, translating it into objects which have an urban and domestic relevance, the great outdoors processed for use or contemplation.
