Making Stories
A Christmas Fantasy

7 November - 10 January 2009

From brilliantly coloured mosaic animals that give a modern twist to traditional ornament to paper figures in muted nursery colours, Making Stories brings together a range of wildly fantastical and instantly appealing craft for a fairytale Christmas show.

Cleo Mussi's vibrant make-believe creatures are formed from recycled and discarded ornaments, reconstructed and given a new lease of life. A china dog is morphed with a flowery teapot, a Japanese doll's head is given the body of a gold fish. Surreal and humorous these striking assemblages flaunt a bizarre and motley beauty.

Delicately drawn wire sculptures hinting at the domestic by Jeanette Orrell are seen alongside tiny shrines by Jessie Chorley. Combining abandoned and found fabrics with the structure of a box or book, Chorley unravels and transforms the original form, creating a magical stage complete with props and curtains.

Julie Arkell adorns her friendly papier-mâché creatures with curious trimmings - embroidery, printed textiles and buttons to create intriguing narratives. Three curious animals inhabit a papier-mâché boat, whilst a donkey wearing a knitted jacket sets off in a teacup on wheels. Stories are told and words and fragments of text are revealed under the skin of paper.
