COVERED
22 April - 27 April 2010
Forget about run-of-the-mill hardbacks and dog-eared paperbacks, the books you can see on show at the flow gallery in Notting Hill from22nd to 27th April 2010 are a world away from the humdrum and everyday books we are all familiar with.
These bindings range from highly imaginative one-off works to the slightly more traditional, from artist books to bindings on classical texts and there will be bindings here to suit every taste and every pocket. Prices range from £60 to £6,000.
Yes, there are books bound in leather and decorated with gold leaf but with a contemporary twist, but if your tastes run to the more adventurous, there are bindings in many other materials and some books that may not look like books at all at first glance.
COVERED has been organised by Designer Bookbinders for a 6th year and shows the work of many of the Society’s Fellows and Licentiates as well as that of invited binders. The work appeals to established collectors but also to those unfamiliar with contemporary binding and to those looking for something different in the world of applied art, often leading to the start of a new enthusiasm. These bindings are the perfect present for a book lover who appreciates the feel of a book as well as its contents – the craftsmanship and artistry that has gone into its creation. Texts are often the work of one of the many small private presses operating in this country : limited editions finely illustrated and printed on good quality paper. There will be more than eighty bindings on show – the work of some forty of the best bookbinders working in Britain today and some names to watch in the future.
Designer Bookbinders has been associated with the Man Booker Prize for nearly twenty years, with the six shortlisted titles being individually designed and bound for presentation to their authors on the night of the Booker Prize Dinner. Similar commissions are undertaken by most of the binders exhibiting at flow.
