Welcoming Robert George to Flow Gallery

Flow is pleased to welcome Robert George to Flow Gallery. Based in Northamptonshire, Robert has worked as an arborist for over a decade, studying, climbing and being in contact with wood in its rawest form – day in, day out and come rain or shine gives him a unique relationship with the work he creates. Provenance is at the heart of every piece, the journey from camaraderie and brilliant teamwork on site to insular and meditative in the studio is encapsulated in his work and self-taught methods of working- following intuition and reflecting upon his own experience of how his material presented itself to him and how this may be perceived in the wider world.

‘SELF-TAUGHT METHODS OF WORKING- FOLLOWING INTUITION AND REFLECTING UPON HIS OWN EXPERIENCE OF HOW HIS MATERIAL PRESENTED ITSELF TO HIM AND HOW THIS MAY BE PERCEIVED IN THE WIDER WORLD’

Timber from trees Robert has sourced himself direct from site either through storm damage or being felled for sound arboricultural reasons, is taken back to his yard where it is sorted for best use. Smaller and awkward sections of timber are mounted on the lathe to be turned, these will form vessels of varying sizes and give an exciting opportunity for creativity. Traditional off the shelf turning tools are used and Robert often pushes these to the absolute limit to produce work of great scale and technicality, with pieces often thin enough that light can be seen permeating its surface.
