MAKERS & MUSEUMS TOUR FINLAND - ONE OF THE DESIGN NATIONS OF THE WORLD

A celebration of Finnish Craft, Design & Architecture started in 1875 with the founding of the Finnish Society of Crafts and Design

This tour is designed to celebrate the best of Finnish art and design by visiting the studios and homes of the most esteemed designers, craftsmen and architects, both past and present. Among them, the world-famous architect, Alvar Aalto, internationally recognised ceramic artists, Kristiina Riska, Pekka Paikka- Ri, and Kati Tuominen-Niittylä, and the workspace of Finland’s well-known master carpenter, Kari Vir-Tanen founder of Nikari, a company making sustainable wooden furniture.

We have created an itinerary that will provide you with a unique window into Finland as a design powerhouse built on the principal aim to enhance local industry and the manufacturing of goods. The journey takes you to the famed cooperative of Fiskars – home to over 120 artists, to Jyväksylä to see Aalto’s Säynätsalo Town Hall – one of his most significant works and the Alvar Aalto Museum.

While in Helsinki, we will visit studios of artists and designers based at Arabia Studios and have a private tour of Arabia’s museum featuring Finland’s most celebrated design brands including Iittala. You’ll have a curator-led tour of the Design Museum, visit the newly opened Amos Rex Museum and enjoy a walking tour of Helsinki’s architectural marvels, including the Kamppi Chapel, known as the “Chapel of Silence”. When visiting the makers’ studios there will be opportunities to purchase works directly from the artists.

While in Helsinki home will be the chic boutique Hotel F6 and lunches and dinners will be at some of the best of the burgeoning new restaurant scene – including one-star Michelin restaurant, Ora where you will enjoy a 10-course taster menu which sources seasonal and local food.

Come join Flow Gallery owner, Yvonna Demczynska and museum voyager, Cathy Giangrande and discover for yourself why Finnish design is held in such high regard and continues to be revered.
