STUDENTS DESIGN TABLEWARE TO ENHANCE THE BEAUTY OF FOOD

You’re in your favourite restaurant enjoying a selection of culinary delights - what if the tableware was as artfully crafted as the food and could enhance your enjoyment of eating? This is the aim of Art Food a new project and exhibition from the Ceramics & Glass programme at the Royal College of Art (RCA) and Domestic Design Department at School of Form (SoF), Poznan, Poland in collaboration with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, and Polish heritage manufacturer, Cmielow Porcelain

Students were asked to develop porcelain forms designed to show the beauty of food and serve as a canvas for the gourmet menus created by chefs, including Tim Allen, head chef at Launceston Place in Kensington and advice from food critic, William Sitwell. Working with visiting Professor and international designer, Marek Cecula and senior tutor Felicity Aylieff, throughout the project students experienced the reality of designing and making, and communicating their ideas to a wider audience. The culmination was a residency at the Cmielow Porcelain factory in Poland, where they worked with expert technicians to see their designs manufactured and produced at a professional level.  

Designs include an Amuse Bouche plate inspired by a drop of milk; geometric pieces that combine classical shapes with rapid prototyping technology; inter-connecting plates that form different patterns for the table; elegant white tableware with flora and foliage indentations to collect and display sauces, referencing the origins of the food being served and tactile cups that connect the maker to the user through imprints left in the original clay model.

 The final 14 pieces of tableware will go on display during the London Design Festival, 16–22 September.
