Through my sculptures of archetypal buildings and houses I explore themes of self, isolation and community. Over the years I have developed an approach to decoration and firing that results in multi-layered surfaces. While alluding to environmental damage and abandonment, this creates a visual interest to draw the onlooker in. The sculptures show a real and an implied history acquired by their passage through the ceramic process. Yet they exhibit a stillness and a solitude. They become objects for reminiscence and contemplation.
Sets of houses
The houses are shown arranged in series. There is a sense of order and community as a whole.Individually however the surface appears more chaotic, they are self contained and private and the small blackened openings make them appear sombre and haunting. We are torn between feeling individual and apart and the need to feel as if we belong to something.
