I work in dense
African hardwoods such as Leadwood, Red Ivory, Wild Olive and Tamboti
making large bowls, platters, vases and hollow forms from timberblocks.
These woods are more accessible to me through my contacts as a wildlife
ecologist in South Africa. None of the timber I use is taken from trees
specifically cut for the purpose but from abandoned dead trees. I have
developed specialist tools and techniques in order to create work from
such abrasive wood. A single piece can take up to 17 hours of hollowing
which is both mentally and physically demanding but extremely rewarding. |
