Solo Show - Chinoko Sakamoto

  • Flow 1-5 Needham Road W11 2RP United Kingdom (map)

This exhibition is our second solo presentation of Japanese artist Chinoko Sakamoto’s ceramic sculptures.

Now based in Nagasaki after a period of study in London, Sakamoto draws from both cultural contexts. The quietude of rural Japan, rich in nature, and the contrasting architecture of cities, inform her sense of form and scale.

Her pieces are not planned but are guided by observation and a trust in process. Impressions surface as she works - textures, objects and moments glimpsed in passing - which slowly find shape.

Her attention to surface is more deliberate. Dedicated to creating her own recipes through ongoing experimentation, she has developed an extensive language of slips & glazes that respond to each piece individually.

Recently, she has begun creating larger works, sometimes taller than herself, that challenge her physical limits and reshape her perception of sculptural space. The impact of this is felt in her smaller sculptures. Her pieces for this exhibition suggest movement beyond their edges, gesturing outward or holding space around them. These works invite close attention and reflect her evolving practice. We invite you to view the exhibition in person at the gallery.
