We recently visited the North London studio of glass artist Jochen Holz, to film the making of his latest series of textured glass tableware for Flow.
Jochen has an intuitive and spontaneous approach to lampworking, and this collection explores the potential tactility of glass.
“I was always a bit jealous of other materials that have a lot of texture, because it embodies some life and history,” he explained.
Using simple, found tools - a cheese grater, a section of Oak discovered on a trip to Spain - Jochen brings this texture and organic imperfection to his glass, shaping each vessel by hand.
“By texturing it and shaping the glass a the same time with the cheese grater or the piece of wood I use, you get an organic shape which is a nice haptic thing for tumblers, and it has a sense of history and uniqueness between each piece.”
