Lauren Nauman

American Ceramic Artist based in London

“THE TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUE OF SLIP CASTING IS CENTRAL TO MY PRACTICE. ALTHOUGH THIS MAY SEEM RESTRICTIVE, I DON’T ALWAYS USE THESE METHODS IN STANDARD WAYS. THEY HAVE SIMPLY BECOME THE TOOLS TO ACHIEVE MY IDEAS.”

The ceramic sculptures by Lauren Nauman are a series of bespoke vessels made of numerous fine vertical lines forming a cylindrical vase. With metal as an aesthetic reference and material contrast, additive and subtractive methods are used to create pieces with minimal amounts of clay. The results show opposing characteristics; clay can be both fluid and rigid.
