Studio Maarten Kolk & Guus Kusters

Dutch Design Duo

“AFTER EACH CAST THE GLAZE FURTHER WASHES AWAY & CRUMBLES, DRAWING A CLEAR PARALLEL WITH WITHERING FLOWERS IN NATURE. THE IMAGE OF THE FLOWER IS CLEAR & SHARP AFTER THE FIRST CAST, WITHERING & FADING AFTER MULTIPLE REPRODUCTIONS”

Studio Maarten Kolk & Guus Kusters was established in 2009 in Eindhoven by Maarten Kolk and Guss Kusters. They studied at the Royal Academy of Arts (KABK) in The Hague and graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2006.

Traditionally, the paintwork on fine china is applied by hand. Maarten and Guus have developed glazing recipes that do not require craftsmen to paint the crockery directly, but rather, the mould before the product is cast. In this way, several copies of one painting can be made. The collection balances nature and the culture of production, emphasizing the beauty of both worlds.
