DESCRIPTION

By Shinji Matsuo

Hand-built ceramic vessel by Japanese artist Shinji Matsuo in his studio in rural Fukuoka. This piece has a raw surface, coloured by the flames of it's firing, and is inspired by ancient forms found across cultures.

Created using the coil technique, the piece is then pit-fired in an open flame - a process where fire, ash and earth naturally mark the surface. The vessel has a raw, sculptural presence and subtle variations that are unique to each piece.

"When firing, I use a primitive method called “pit firing” (or “open firing”), similar to the techniques used in ancient times and across Africa."
