Pale Moon IV

Made by Norwegian ceramic artist Nina Malterud, this wall panel is part of her Pale Moon Series. Multiple layers of white glaze and slip, applied over several firings over earthenware clay, become a rhythmic process. The first glaze layer serves as the ground. New layers sink into the previous ones and interact in more ore less predictable ways, settling in various degrees of transparency. Nina gladly lets the kiln bring forth unexpected surfaces that look blistered, shrunken, crazed, or marked with unexpected patterns. Each piece has more than ten firings.
