In this new collection for Flow, Helen Carnac transforms industrial materials into studies of structure, texture, and change.

When we visited Helen and her partner, David Gates, at their home and studios last summer, we talked about their move from London to Somerset. Helen’s earlier work was shaped in part by the structures and surfaces of the architecture along the River Thames, and these new pieces begin to reflect something of her rural surroundings.

This collection brings together vitreous enamel, copper gauze and steel wire in compositions with an increasing softness and layering of transparencies. Crumpled copper shim and gauze have the feeling of fabric. Shapes don't feel finally fixed and textures seem to still be settling. Her layers of enamel on copper appear weathered and changing as they interact with the metal.

The works invite close observation, questioning how materials coexist, support one another and evolve over time.
