British Wood Artist
Working from his studio in Hampshire, Louis precisely turns native hardwoods into footed bowls, rimmed plates and trays. Drawing on the forms of studio pottery, his vessels suggest ceramics, while having the incredible thinness and lightness of carved wood. Their surfaces are built up through layers of lacquer, foraged local clay and ash, creating subtle variations of colour and texture that make each piece unique.
The beauty in Louis’s work is in the finely turned forms meeting the organic qualities of the materials. Each vessel reveals something different in its surface, with the character of the wood interacting with the delicate traces of his finishes.
