We visited ceramic artists Jon & Neu at their home and studio in Auribeau, Provence, last year, where we were introduced to their thoughtful, material-led practice. Having trained in Japan, the duo work together to create handbuilt stoneware vessels shaped by their connection to the surrounding landscape.
Each vessel has a quiet, balanced presence, with gently tapered forms narrowing towards a small opening. Their raw, matte surfaces are built up with layers of locally gathered and refined clays, creating subtle variations in colour and texture that reflect the earth from around their home. Small irregularities and traces of the hand remain visible, giving each piece its own character.
