Japanese Potter

Tamotsu Suzuki’s studio sits at the foot of Mt. Yatsugatake in Yamanashi Prefecture, at an altitude of 900 meters, surrounded by nature. Working with a red clay, rich in iron, the fired vessels become dark and contrast with a pale “kohiki” style slip. His balanced forms are coiled by hand, with matte surfaces that retain subtle impressions of the process. Each vessel develops its own character through the interaction of the slip with the clay and the marks left by his fingertips.
