Hand-built ceramic vessel by Japanese artist Shinji Matsuo in his studio in rural Fukuoka. This piece is coloured by the flames of it's firing and is inspired by ancient forms found across cultures.
Created using the coil technique, the piece is then pit-fired in an open flame - a process where fire, ash and earth naturally mark the surface. The vessel has a raw, sculptural presence and subtle variations that are unique to each piece.
"When firing, I use a primitive method called “pit firing” (or “open firing”), similar to the techniques used in ancient times and across Africa."
